From Merchant Assistant in Fine Jewelry to Financial Analyst- Laritza Mendez
Hard working women are everywhere, they stop at nothing to be on top and show what they made of but there is one women in particular named Laritza Mendez who shows what it means to be diligent. She's been giving 12 years of her life to Macy's but she plans to stay even longer.
“I came from a banking background when first started as a in the company of Macys and to retail so that was a culture shock which contributed to the nerves," says Mendez. The first position she got was merchant assistant in fine jewelry. Fine Jewelry is definitely one of the most popular and important departments in the store. What this position was that she had to buy all clients special orders and bigger/better diamond quality requests. But this was back around the years of 2000s.
After she completed school, she decided to go into the finance; mainly just being the financial analyst which focuses more on the coupons for the store and on the cash registers in all the stores. "Apparently I competed with three other people, not sure if they were male or female, so it was anonymous," said Mendez. But out of everybody, she got it and it was a whole new world compared to fine jewelry. " So far in my professional aspect, my promotion has been my biggest accomplishment."
She told me in such a positive notion about the start she had about Macys, " Going to a new job is always a bit nerve wrecking BUT I had confedience I would do well and always start new positions with a positive mind", being that she was the only Caribbean women in the office after she got her new position, she always kept that in mind. She also shared with me that there is a diversity within her office but still not enough, " There are a lot of men bosses in my job but the women are pretty up there too, but even so their still Caucasian."
Even though being a financial analyst for almost a couple years now, she is looking to her future there in the Macys company," It was a conversation in my annual review last week, starting to look into the next level for promotion but I would like to stay in finance, we'll see where it goes."
